Tendo

Connecting patients with their care journey

Objective

Create a way for patients to connect with their entire care history and journey, for both mobile and web. We’ll pull patient data from EMRs like Epic and display that in one place for each patient. The goal was to create one place for all your care needs and when you thought about your care journey, you thought about Tendo.

Requirements

To make the app most useful for patients, we needed a few major functions: messaging care provider, viewing entire care history, schedule appointments, and view upcoming tasks. We also needed to design the layout in a way that allowed for additional features in the near future. Some of which included notes, insurance information, medications, and payment options.

Exploration

I worked closely with the product manager and design team to explore many different layouts and UI treatments. We were still exploring ways to display the brand and UI so it appealed to a wide audience. We landed on using nature illustrations to fill out the UI in ways that were creative and unique. Our main illustration of the landscape changed depending on the time of day it was.

Solution

There were a large number of problems we solved throughout the 3 years I worked at Tendo. We successfully developed the PCJ app into a full-fledged patient portal for customers like Exponential and Rush Healthcare. Along the way we learned a lot of lessons, least of which is the difficulty of working with EMRs.

Summary

This project was a large and complex one. We created a scalable layout that worked on many other apps that Tendo continues to use this day. We created a design system and library that helped the teams stay consistent across all products and iterate quickly. I learned that a well-funded startup isn’t guaranteed success and can get pretty messy at times. But it was valuable hear perspectives from all areas of the organization when aiming as high as we did.
