SpeedGrader

The Canvas Teacher App makes grading fast and easy

Objective

As part of the rearchitecting of the Canvas Teacher App on both iOS and Android, we had the goal of improving our grading experience for instructors. Because this was specifically a mobile experience, the goal was to make grading as fast as possible, without being complex.

Requirements

The requirements for what we called SpeedGrader included support for various assignment formats, the ability to quickly switch between student submissions, integration with the district rubric, viewing multiple files within a single assignment, and adding comments as needed.

Exploration

The team went through many iterations on design to find the right balance of functionality and speed. We flew out to different universities across the U.S. to test prototypes and gain critical feedback on making the entire experience better.

Solution

Making the experience fluid and fun came with some technical challenges. We focused on utilizing gestures to swipe through student submissions left & right, while displaying a drawer with multiple segments for their grade, comments, and files. The experience was a success with instructors all over the world.

Summary

The Teacher App was used by thousands of instructors across the world and SpeedGrader has been a massive hit, allowing them to save time grading submissions and staying connected with their students. And because the experience was built on both mobile and tablets, instructors are able to grade on their commute or in front of the TV.
